I have a student who likes to consider the daily ethical dilemmas of medical conundrums that some doctor posts on TikTok as discussion openers and as learning pieces for students who are interested in going into medicine.
On TikTok.
TikTok is educating our future doctors, and we have science deniers in power who only care about the financial possibilities of a merger that includes the social media platform.
How can there be such a disconnect between our young students and the people in charge? And now the potential ban on TikTok is making its way through the court system.
Not utilizing the potential of all of this amazing technology certainly leaves so much educational possibility on the table.
Our students are going to dance circles around us and then post that stuff on social media.
I have other students who are watching surgery videos on Twitter. Yep, Twitter has surgery videos; I didn't believe it either. Students are building websites to connect local restaurants to potential patrons so the pandemic won't shutter every local eatery along the Jersey Shore.
These kids are thinking outside of boxes that we (as adults) can't even see.
So, as I think about the best way to bring some Zoom interaction to hundreds of families in multiple high schools in the area, I try to plan for the parent level of comfort with technology and sneak in some fun with graphics and polls that will hopefully make the presentation about college admissions more interactive and informative. I did actually use my newly acquired Adobe Spark skills and make a mini video that went out in the email to maybe 400 families over the past few days, and that's just for the first high school on the "tour."
These "makings" are absolutely pushing me to reconsider how I mentor, especially as I try to help lead so many families through what is going to be a murky admissions cycle, with scattered SAT/ACT scores and fewer scholarship offers because of difficult international admissions across the board.
Not that anything in college admissions was ever certain, but this year is going to be even weirder...so I made sure to use fun music and a doggo in the video.
Enjoy!
